You probably know that most locomotives and subway cars are equipped with heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC). These systems cool the passenger cars, and the heat has to be transferred somewhere. This is where condenser coils are used. Function: Condenser coils are part of the refrigeration cycle in the AC system. They dissipate heat from the refrigerant to condense the gas into a liquid state so that the refrigerant can travel back to the evaporator coil inside the passenger car. Sources of heat on a train/subway: AC system Passenger heat Electric motors (traction, inverters, batteries) Lighting and other electronics There are a few challenges with rail applications, such as lack of space, vibration, exposure to the outdoors, and airflow. Here are some common condenser coils used in rail applications: Air-Cooled Condenser Coils Finned-tube coils with fans Heat is transferred from the refrigerant to the surrounding air
