A finned tube heat exchanger basically uses these metal fins stuck onto tubes to make more surface area for moving heat around. It is pretty useful especially when one of the fluids does not transfer heat that well compared to the other one. Like air usually has a really low heat transfer coefficient so fins help a lot by boosting the area on that side.
The fluids going inside the tubes can be things like refrigerant or water or even steam and oil. CO2 and ammonia too I guess for certain setups. Outside the tubes its mostly air blowing over everything but sometimes other gases in different kinds of applications.
So how does it actually work. A hot or cold fluid runs through the tubes and then air gets pushed or pulled across the fins. The heat goes from the fluid to the tube wall then to the fin and finally to the air if its for cooling. Or the other way around for heating where air warms up the fluid inside. Those fins make such a big difference in the surface area it really improves how efficient the whole thing is at transferring heat.
For construction the tubes are often round copper ones in sizes like 7 mm or 9.52 mm and 12.7 mm since copper works well. Aluminum tubes come in for lighter weight or those microchannel types. Then steel or stainless for industrial stuff that needs to handle high temperatures. Copper nickel is used in marine places because of corrosion.
