The Function of Industrial Coils

The industrial coil is an important component of the refrigeration system and could also be referred to as the indoor coil or cooling coil.
As warm air is blown across the industrial coil, the cold refrigerant inside the coil absorbs heat from the air and causes the refrigerant to evaporate into a gas. This process cools and dehumidifies the air before it is delivered into the space as conditioned air.

Types of Industrial Coils

Horizontal industrial coil

This configuration of an industrial coil is compatible with air conditioners lying on their sides. These configurations are often easier to clean, and they take up less space, so you can install them in an attic or crawl space.

Cased industrial coil

A cased industrial coil with the metal casing is one of the most common configurations you'll most likely see in your local area. While it handles upward or downward airflow, it can also take on a horizontal shape.

Uncased industrial coil

An uncased industrial coil is similar to the cased industrial coil, but it doesn't have a protective case, so it's easy to customize if you have a different air conditioner. You can either place it in a vertical or horizontal position, and there's no outer metal casing covering the coils.

Industrial Coils Technical Design

Rows
The evaporating refrigerant temperature is closer to the air temperature than a heating coil. Also, to keep water from running off excessively the air face velocity has to be low. Both of these factors increase the number of rows required. Typical Evaporators will have between 4 and 8 rows.

Tube Diameter
The refrigerants moving through an evaporator have fairly high operating pressures, although they are significantly lower than those in the condenser. There are situations in which 5/8" tubes are used, but most commonly we see 3/8" and 1/2".

Connections
Connections for most refrigerant applications are copper sweat. Other types of connections are prone to leak, which is a big problem when working with refrigerants.

The Basic Principle Of Industrial Coils

Heat absorption: With the HVAC system running, warm indoor air is drawn into the air handler and then directed over the evaporator coil. Meanwhile, inside the coil, cold refrigerant is circulating.

Refrigerant evaporation: The refrigerant absorbs heat from the air and then evaporates into a gas. This process is what enables the system to pull heat out of your home.

Cooled air distribution: Once the heat has been removed, the air which is now cool is pushed back through the ductwork and into your rooms.

Refrigeration cycle continuation: At this point, the refrigerant is now a warm vapour. It travels to the condenser coil outside where the heat is released and the refrigerant is returned to a liquid state. It then cycles back to the evaporator to repeat the process.
