York makes these replacement coils, and now they are part of Johnson Controls, which also handles stuff like Luxaire and Coleman. A lot of their problems are pretty standard in the HVAC world, but there are some things that stand out just for York.
One big one is those SmartCoil evaporator coils from the late 1990s up to the early 2010s. They were supposed to be super efficient, but honestly, they had this flaw with the micro-channel aluminum tubing that had grooves inside. It makes them really susceptible to formicary corrosion and these tiny pinhole leaks. I think thats why so many fail way too early, like after 5 to 12 years. Its a York thing that technicians talk about a lot.
Then there are the drain pans that rust out fast. Some models use galvanized steel, and it just corrodes through before it should, causing water leaks and damage everywhere. You end up having to swap the whole coil and drain pan setup.
Corrosion hits in places like coastal areas or where its humid or acidic. That eats at the aluminum fins and copper tubes no matter what. And beyond the SmartCoil mess, there have been batches of regular tube-and-fin coils with way more leaks than normal. Its not rare for folks who work on these systems.
