A steam radiator coil is this heavy duty kind of steam heating coil, made for spots that need a lot of heat and can handle tough conditions. Like, if the air is dirty or its hard to get in there for maintenance, this thing works well. I think the name radiator comes from how it mostly heats by radiating warmth from its hot surface, and then convection helps out a bit too.
What sets it apart from regular finned tube steam coils is the way its built, with fewer fins and more open space. It seems designed to push out big heat in rough environments, without getting messed up easy. The fin density is lower, maybe 3 to 6 fins per inch, unlike those standard HVAC ones that go 8 to 16. That makes cleaning simpler, and it does not clog as much with dirty or fibrous air.
They use thicker materials for the tubes and fins, so it stands up to abuse, corrosion, stuff like that, and high pressure steam too. Spacing between fins is wider, which cuts down on pressure drop for the air side, important if youre using basic fans or just gravity for convection. A lot of the heat comes from radiation off the exposed metal, which feels nice because its draft free and warms people and objects directly.
On construction, the tubes are usually carbon steel, like ASTM A214, or stainless steel. Copper is not as common, since its not as strong when thick and costs more for these big heavy coils. Steel deals with high pressure steam without a problem.
