Steam coil heaters seem like one of those basic but really useful things in factories or big buildings. They work by using steam that condenses and gives off a lot of heat to warm up air or liquids pretty quickly. I mean, its not complicated, but it gets the job done without much fuss.
The way it all happens is through this latent heat from the steam changing phase. Thats about 1000 BTU per pound at zero pressure, which sounds huge when you think about it. So when the steam turns back to water inside the tubes, that heat jumps over to whatever is flowing around them. It makes heating fast because the transfer rates are high, and the temperature stays steady at whatever the steam is set to, like around 298 degrees Fahrenheit if its at 50 psig. Plus, if you already have steam around from other plant stuff, its efficient, I guess.
There are different kinds based on how they are built inside to avoid problems like freezing. The basic one is just a simple coil with fins, maybe serpentine or multiple rows. Steam goes in one side, and the water comes out the other. You use these for air that is not going to freeze, like warming up air thats already okay temperature after some handler or for process stuff. But if cold air hits it, below freezing, the condensate might ice up and burst the tubes, which is a risk you dont want.
