Subway stations deal with all sorts of challenges for their heating and cooling setups. There are so many people packed in there at once, plus the trains give off a ton of heat from braking and all that. And being underground makes it tricky with the temperature changes outside and stuff getting damp sometimes.
I think the main goal for these systems is to keep things comfortable for riders and workers. They have to push out smoke if something happens, get rid of bad smells, and clear the air of carbon dioxide buildup. Humidity is a big issue down there too, since water seeps in easy. Then theres handling the extra heat from escalators, lights, and all the electronic gear running nonstop. It all has to work around the clock without breaking down much.

Heat loads in stations can get really intense. Trains rubbing against tracks, lights staying on, electronics humming away. Especially in summer, cooling becomes this huge priority, otherwise it feels miserable waiting on the platform.
For smaller spots, they use these direct expansion systems. Its basically refrigerant doing the cooling work in places like control rooms or where tickets are sold. Server areas too, I guess, to keep everything from overheating.
Cooling the platforms and tunnels takes more effort. Fans pull in cooler air from up on the street level and force it down into the tunnels. Some cities even tap into groundwater or nearby rivers to act as a way to dump the heat. That seems smart, but it probably depends on where you are.
